Resistors are an important aspect of any electronic or electrical circuit. That noted they do not play an outstanding role. The purpose of the resistors is to resist the flow of current within a circuit. The result of the resistors functioning is referred to as resistance which is measured in Ohms and represented by the sign omega. A resistor limits the quantity of power that gets to the other components of the system. If for instance there is too much current going to a light bulb it will be damaged. In this way a resistor is a guardian to other sections of the circuit.
Varying systems require varying levels of resistance. A custom resistor is therefore a resistor made for a specific system. They are designed for different systems and uses. When picking a resistor for a system one should know how much heat the resistor can endure before it is rendered useless. Resistors are bound to heat up when current passes through them.
A resistor which has higher limit will become warmer than one with lower limit. The material the resistor is made of may not be capable of handling certain temperatures and therefore it will be damaged at those temperatures. So a customer resistor should be made with consideration to how much heat is likely t be produced while it is in use.
The accuracy of a particular resistor is known as tolerance. It is not possible to create a custom resistor that is absolutely correct for a system and the current flowing through it. The tolerance or accuracy of a resistor is given in terms of plus or minus a specific percentage. For instance, a 5% resistor with a value of 200 ohms has a resistance of between 190 ohms and 210 ohms.
Custom resistors can be made of carbon, ceramics or metal. As noted above resisters build up heat as current flows through them. The material they are made of should be able to withstand the heat without for instance catching fire or melting. Many of the Available resistors in the market are made of carbon and metal.
They come in either surface-mount or through-hole mount termination types. The main material for Through-hole mount are either made of carbon, metal film or very thin metal foil. The former is the cheaper option. The surface mount resistors are generally created with either thick metal foil or thin metal foil. It should be noted that resistors made of thin foil are low-cost as compared to those made of thin foil. Equally a variable resistor is better than a static resistor. The resistors can also be regulated to operate within a range of values. They are also called rheostats and are often used in such components as knobs for volume.
